This set of photos was taken by journalists from Apple Daily and Ming Pao in the same event. They reported that Franklin Lam Fan- keung, a member of Executive Council, explained the sale of two flats just before the government’s surprise announcement of measures to cool down the property market in a program of Commercial Radio. Although the journalists reported on the same issue, they picked up totally different moments to represent Franklin. It is obvious to show both newspapers' stances towards this issue by their selection of photos.
The first photo which was taken by Apple Daily shows an awkward moment of Franklin Lam. In the photo, Franklin looks very frustrated and annoyed with his distorted facial expression. The position of his hand seems that he just scratched his head. Both the facial expression and gesture of Franklin give us a sense that he was so nervous that he did not know what to say.
The second photo, taken by Ming Pao, shows that Franklin was so confident. He tried to give reasonable responses to this issue with the support of documents. It seems to me that he was well-prepared to give an explanation to the journalists.
From the photos above, we can tell that different media express their different attitudes through photos. The Apple Daily one targets to give a bad impression of Franklin to the public, showing that he is incompetent and untrustworthy. In contrast, the photo shown in Ming Pao tends to be unbiased. It seems to me that Ming Pao is more objective and allows Franklin to explain.
Overall, Apple Daily tries to lead readers to think that Franklin is telling lies while Ming Pao is unbiased in this issue. We should better use our critical thinking to look at this news and do not blindly follow what media tells.
