The Victims
The Ruin
The photos, The Victims and The Ruin, are captured after the hurricane Sandy arrived New York on 31stOctober 2012 by two photojournalists. Both of them described the damage of New York, but they possess different angle and presentation in reflecting the situation.
The Victims includes two dwellers hugging each other and crying in where their homes originally located, but the houses have been destroyed. As for The Ruin, it shows a messy area and there are few people.
The compositions of the two photos actually show that they have different narratives to tell. The two people in The Victims are placed at the center with a large size, so the photo focuses on the subjects and their facial expression. In contrast, The Ruin is probably taken from a helicopter so many ruined houses are captured and the people are small. Thus, the environment is the main point instead of the subjects. From the discrepancy, we can understand that the photographer of The Victims wants to emphasize the hopelessness of the residents while photographer of The Ruin stresses on the environmental destruction.
I think The Victims may raise sympathy of viewers and make them to mourn for the victims whereas The Ruin only reflects the fact of how the city has been injured. Therefore, I prefer The Victim as it is more emotional and touching.
