C.Y. Leung has accepted the suggestion of Committee on Initiation of Moral and National Education Subject that is to ‘officially shelf’ the subject. This political cartoon is drawn in response to that announcement. It shows the cartoonist’s opinion on this issue through the environmental settings and the dialogues.

The cartoon character on the right is Anna Wu-Hung-Yuk, the Chairperson of the Committee. Viewers can recognize her by the hairstyle, buck teeth and freckles. The character on the left is probably a member of Scholarism since members of Scholarism always wear a black T-shirt when they are protesting the curriculum.

There is an operating lamp, table and coat, so it is in an operating room while the subject name is placed on the operating table. This implies the subject is determined by Anna Wu, just like a surgery is controlled by the doctor.

The dialogues play on pronounciation of words too. The member of Scholarism asks whether Anna has withdrawn the subject by using the word ”切” which is a homophone of “撤” that means withdrawal, while Anna Wu responds by using the word “割” which has similar pronunciation with “擱” that means to leave aside. This cartoon is sarcastic to the government that she played around the words to avoid direct responses.

Love the way you analyzed the play on words and pronunciation! The use of language is really confusing in this instance!
